Story & Questions: Tell Me About a Failure

After "Why do you want this role?," the question that makes candidates visibly uncomfortable is "Tell me about a failure." Interviewers ask it to test self-awareness, accountability, and growth mindset - and most candidates fail it by picking a fake weakness, blaming others, or skipping the lesson entirely.

The coach has debriefed enough hiring managers to know exactly what they are listening for: did this candidate take ownership, or did they deflect? Is the lesson real and specific, or is it a platitude? And most importantly - did they actually change because of it?

The coach teaches the Situation → Mistake → Lesson → Growth framework. First, set the scene with enough context that the interviewer understands the stakes. Then own the mistake specifically - no passive voice, no blaming the team. Next, articulate a concrete, non-generic lesson. Finally, show how you operate differently today because of it. The growth step is non-negotiable - an answer that ends on the failure is an answer that failed.

In this session the coach will help you identify a real failure worth sharing, push you past defensive language, and refine your answer until it is honest, structured, and lands on genuine growth. The goal is an answer that makes the interviewer trust you, not doubt you.
