Story & Questions: How to Apologize

Featuring: Amara Osei

A bad apology makes things worse. A good one rebuilds trust. Learn the Name-It → Own-It → Fix-It framework to apologize in a way that actually lands - without excuses, defensiveness, or empty promises.

Scenario Backstory

A bad apology makes things worse. It signals that you care more about your own comfort than the other person's hurt. A good apology rebuilds trust. The coach has seen both - the defensive non-apology that escalates the conflict, and the simple, sincere apology that opens the door to repair. The framework is Name-It → Own-It → Fix-It. Name the specific action you are apologizing for - not 'whatever I did,' but exactly what you did. Own the impact - not 'I did not mean it that way,' but 'I can see how that would make you feel.' Then commit to a specific change - not 'I will try to be better,' but what you will actually do differently. Three sentences. It does not guarantee forgiveness. But it makes it possible.
